What Are You Listening To?

I am going to try to pay attention to the spring.
I am going to look around at all the flowers,
and look up at the hectic trees.
I am going to close my eyes and listen.

Continuing to progress through Lent, and through the theme of listening, I am finding more things to listen to. The song of birds has ramped up considerably, which is a joyful and refreshing thing to hear. The sound of rain, or wind has begun. Debate on our national divisions has also been ramping up. Incredible – just when it seemed like that cacophony was as intense as it could be, it becomes more so.

Lenten practice takes me to try listening to the more peaceful sounds, and voices. Words from last Sunday's anthem said “listen more often to things than to beings.”

As a spiritual practice of listening, what are we listening to? What are we listening for?
