Mary's Revolutionary Prayer

The Magnificat – Mary's radical prayer of justice, is one of the great hymns of the ancient church. It has been set to music by Vivaldi, Bach, Rachmaninoff , to name only a few of the many. It is carried in the pockets of refugees and revolutionaries. It is about power and overturning government and triumph for the downtrodden. We should be arrested for reading it.

But read it we do, in church, at Christmas. God-with-us leads us to do so. Acknowledging that Christ came to see and love all people is an inescapable part of the Christmas message. Gifts may come and go, but this message comes to up all every year, generation upon generation.

This Sunday, which is both the fourth Sunday of Advent and Christmas Eve, brings us to the Magnificat, to the candle of love, to the light in the darkness.

Blessings abound. Jeannie
